 About Showa-No-Sakae Camellias Minimize
Showa-No-Sakae is a wonderful camellia variety. It has a low spreading habit that does best as a groundcover or container plant. As other camellias, Showa-No-Sakae has a year round ornamental interest with its flowering and nice evergreen foliage.

Planting & Establishing Shrubs:  Dig the planting hole to be at least twice the width of the root ball.  Do not plant too deep.  This is essential.  Planting too deep is the most common reason for young plant failure.  The root flare zone, which is the top most root in the root ball, should be located just above the soil surface.  If there is any soil above the root flare scrap it off.  It is recommended that you apply a thick layer of mulch around the shrub to help control weed growth.  Use a regular watering schedule throughout the first growing season to help establish a root system.

**Do not over fill the planting hole with 100% organic matter, use backfill and organic mix. **

Showa-No-Sakae was named in honor of Japanese Emperor Hirohito. His era was named Showa meaning ’ the era of enlightening peace’.

When translated to English Showa-No-Sakae means ‘glory of Showa’.

There are about 250 camellia varieties currently known.
  
 Flowers & Foliage Minimize
The flowers are a nice pink color with a gold stamens in the center. Showa-No-Sakae are in an informally double form.

The foliage is evergreen. The leaves have a leathery texture.

  • Planting camellias in the sun may suffer from scald.
  • Plants of sasanqua camellia generally do better in the sun then those of C.Japonica.
  • A soil test will tell you what is needed to bring the soil to the desire pH and fertility level.
  • Plants install in fall and winter will provide additional nutrients to the plant when spring arrives.
